Takers: Cops and Robbers for generation SWAG

Sometimes us movie buffs have a tendency to unfairly judge a film based on the success of its predecessors. Instead of taking a newly released movie at face value, we set it aside the greatest to come from its genre and analyze every scene to see how the newbie measures up. In the case of Takers many critics are guilty of exactly this. I implore you movie goers, don’t let yourself fall into this trap! Accept the movie for what it is and I promise you'll have a lot more fun. Takers satisfies in all the right ways. It sticks to the script of Guns, Girls, and Money while taking “fresh” to the next level. Italian cut suites are the norm and these guys only hide out in the nicest digs. That’s what its all about really, making crime look good. In this regard Takers succeeds. Lookout for classic performances from Idris Elba and TIP.

Paper Heart

Ok Ok Ok so I’m kind of a sap. And a romantic. And a poet. Well maybe not a poet. But still, I can appreciate a good love story you know? Paper heart is, for sure, one you guys should really check out. The documentary follows Charlyne Yi (the weird little Asian girl from knocked up) on her very pessimistic search for love. Along the way she meets and eventually starts a relationship with fellow nerd-person Michael Cera. The budding relationship becomes the subject of the story as all of Charlyne and Cera’s quirks and insecurities, crushing moments and blushed cheeks are caught on camera. Many of their industry friends weigh in on the situation, providing comedic commentary on Love and Love lost. Cameos by Seth Rogen and Jake Johnson are most notable. The trailer really does the movie more justice than anything else so check it out!

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

I’m really excited about this one! In "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World" Michael Cera takes on a host of crazy Ex's in an attempt to win the heart of his drea girl. While Ceras emo/rocker frame clearly isnt molded after that of your traditional anti-villian, his ability to use physical comedy in conjunction with sensitivity makes for the perfect mix. The fight scenes look hilariously entertaining and the premise is ammusingly refreshing. A testament to how far a guy will go to win the heart of the girl he loves this stylistic comedy will have you re thinking how far you’d go to get that girl.

The Kids Are Alright

Going to movie with your girlfriend can be dreadful sometimes. You want to see Rambo; she wants to see something, well, something else. Its the ulitmate form of tourture for a guy like me. That being said, if you are forced to sit through a "chick flick" this summer guys, this one isnt all bad. Another indie house flick “The Kids are Alright” is a funny, smart, sexy (in lesbianistic soccer mom kind of way) chick flick that has just as many laughs as cries. The story focuses on 2 lesbians whose kids, concieved through invitro fertilization, want to meet the guy whose sperm helped make them. Their “dad” turns out to be this cool guy with a different take on life. Of course his entry into their lives turns the family upside down but ultimately everything works out because “The Kids are Alright”. This movie is an alternative to the formulaic approach most Hollywood studios take to creating summer date flicks. So if you are feeling adventurous or just need a little bit more girl on girl action in your life check it out. It might just surprise you.

Inception

Christopher Nolan and Leo Dicaprio are so money! Inception is simply a great movie. I won’t even attempt a synopsis as the plot summary would be too complicated to summarize in one of these short blurbs. But, basically Inception is everything that you’ve heard it is. It’s confusing, breathtaking, thought provoking and some would even venture to say a flat out “masterpiece”. Inception is literally Christopher Nolan’s genius on display. Following the trend of other great releases (Dark Night, Memento) Nolan perfectly delivers a “mind fuck” in an ultimately entertaining body of work. The movie, presented in intricate “layers,” is the perfect mix of existential examination and innovative action sequences. The master execution of both endeavors keeps us so involved that it’s almost as if we are in the Dream. At times it’s almost impossible to tell what’s real and what’s not and at the end of it all, just as when you wake up from a real dream, who knows exactly what happened.

Cyrus

Jonah Hill is on a roll, he probably hasn’t made a bad movie since Strange Wilderness which wasn’t even his fault. Haven’t seen it? Don’t worry about it, it was that bad. In this new indie rom/com, Cyrus, Hill plays the grown age son of hotter than hot Molly (Marisa Tomei). Cyrus and Molly have an unusually close relationship and things get hilariously sticky when down and out John (John C. Riley) falls in love with Molly at a party. John thinks he's hit the jackpot and can’t understand why a woman so hot and cool has fallen for him, until he meets her son. Cyrus attempts to break up the newly formed couple by putting John in a number of hillariously awkward situations and circumstances. I don’t wont to give to much away but this gem of a film might be one of the best movies of the summer. Hill delivers like only he can using his “overdeveloped” body in perfect juxtaposition to his freakishly nimble personality. While this movie is only in indie houses now it is gradually being released in big theaters. But If you can’t wait that long, check it out at one of my favorite DC indie houses E. St Cinema.
